Samsung Washing Machine Disinfects With Silver - No Hot Water Needed

Samsung Electronics has introduced a washing machine that uses the antibiotic properties of silver instead of hot water to disinfect clothing.

When the “Ag Plus” washing machine is set on “Silver Sterilization,” the system generates silver nanoparticles that kill off most of the bacteria and mold in the laundry load without using hot water. The inside of the washing machine tub is also specially treated to kill bacteria and mold and suppress the odor and contamination that accompanies bacteria and mold formation.

After the washing is complete, clothes have been found to be completely devoid of bacteria, earning the “Sterilization Mark” from the Korea Testing & Research Institute for the Chemical Industry, company officials said.

The Ag Plus can also be set on a 2-stage, high-concentration “Deep Cleaning” mode for 30 percent more power to remove more stubborn stains. A self-cleaning function also completely removes all particles from the tub after the laundry is done.

The company hopes to sell 300,000 front loading models in the domestic market, along with one million fully-automatic and other top-loading models. The machines retail for under US$750.
